Typography
I became interested in typography after reading several computer science books that were typeset in an extraordinary poor way. Word processors like Word make it increasingly more easy for novices to typeset big documents like books. But these programs typically do not assist the user in producing legible, easy to read, and esthetically pleasing documents. In addition, such systems often have no supporting mechanism for controlling micro-typographic features like ligatures or kerning.I typeset most of my documents with LaTeX. It's so much superior compared to all WYSIWYG word processing software. Its ability to separate content from the actual representation increases productivity by promoting the reuse of typographic styles. My LaTeX environment of choice is TexShop. It uses the TeX distribution from Gerben Wierda. I manage my bibliography with BibDesk, a frontend for BibTex. For quickly writing a fax or a letter, I usually use Mellel, a small but fancy word-processor which is based on a similar philosophy like Tex. Among all operating systems, MacOS X offers by far the most sophisticated support for typography.
